Introduction to SwiftBroadband Satcom
An "Always On" Service and Data Connection
Inmarsat introduced a
high-speed IP based data service allowing higher data
throughput at a lower cost than the traditional circuit
switched services. This high-speed data services
is called SwiftBroadband.
SwiftBroadband is an IP
based packet switched service that provides an always on
data connection of up to 432kbps throughput per channel
on a contended basis. Up to two channels per
aircraft are currently available for each
SwiftBroadband installation.
SwiftBroadband provides the
following:

Allows for a
combination of packet switched services to run
concurrently.

Provides high
quality voice channel with the full functionality of
a traditional phone service.

Provides a circuit
switched ISDN line.
This service is provided over a constellation of three Inmarsat 4 satellites. They provide high
bandwidth and use the L-band spectrum more
efficiently. Each of the satellites has 16 times
the traffic bearing capacity compared to earlier
satellites.
The SwiftBroadband IP connection can be used for a
variety of solutions and applications such as Email,
Internet access, VPN, FTP, Voice, Fax, Video
conferencing and GSM/GPRS, personal cell phone use in
the aircraft.

is currently in work with Rockwell Collins, Honeywell,
CMC, and EMS Satcom on 767 and
777 SwiftBroadband (SBB) projects.
